VJ Day or Victory over Japan Day celebrates the moment when Japan surrendered, bringing an end to hostilities in the Pacific during the Second World War.

For the UK and many Commonwealth countries, this day is observed on the 15th August 1945, when Emperor Hirohito declared the surrender.
In the United States however, the day is often marked on the 2nd September 1945, when the formal signing took place aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
Troops Serving Beyond VE Day
While VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) on 8 May 1945 marked the end of the war in Europe, the conflict continued in the Pacific with many British and Commonwealth troops continuing to battle against Japanese forces in Asia and the Pacific.

Honouring the 80th Anniversary
The 80th anniversary in 2025 has prompted a number of poignant observances:
A national two-minute silence will be held across Britain at noon on 15th August 2025, honouring those who fought and fell in the Far East.
A remembrance ceremony at the National Memorial Arboretum, involving Armed Forces personnel, a Guard of Honour, and a dramatic flypast by the Red Arrows along with historic aircraft such as Spitfires and Hurricanes
Royal involvement includes King Charles and Queen Camilla attending a remembrance service, with the King delivering a national address.
Media tributes are also planned: Sky HISTORY is producing the documentary 'The Last Burma Star', recognising the veterans of the Burma Campaign.
As we reflect on the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, we remember that the war did not end neatly with VE Day. Thousands of servicemen and women remained deployed in the Far East, flying, fighting, repairing and ultimately seeing the war through to its conclusion.
This milestone is being honoured with dignity and unity, from national silences and flypasts to royal tributes and media commemorations.
